THE UNITED NATIONS MEDAL (UNMIS)

Obverse: The United Nations global projection emblem, above which are the letters "U.N.".

Reverse: Plain, with the legend "IN THE SERVICE OF PEACE".

Size: 35mm in diameter.

Ribbon: 35mm wide the ribbon for this medal is of light UN blue, symbolising the presence of the United Nations. The three inner bands in dark blue symbolise the International Security presence and the co-operation and support received from it. The two bands in white between the dark blue bands symbolise the overall objective to promote peace for all the people in Sudan. Ninety days of service in the Mission was necessary to qualify for award of the medal.

Suspension: The ribbon is threaded through a 12mm diameter ring, which passes through a loop fixed to the top of the piece. The ring will move forwards and backwards.

United Nations Mission In Sudan was established on 24 March 2005 by adoption of the Security Council Resolution 1590 and was initially established for a period of six months. This was later extended. According to its mandate, UNMIS is tasked with supporting the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement. UNMIS is also tasked with facilitating the voluntary return of refugees and displaced persons; providing demining assistance; and contributing towards international efforts to protect and promote human rights in Sudan.

New Zealand Defence Force personnel have served with UNMIS since 17 September 2005 as military observers and staff officers.
