THE UNITED NATIONS MEDAL (UNMOP)

Obverse: The United Nations global projection emblem, above which are the letters "UN".

Reverse: Plain, with the legend "IN THE SERVICE OF PEACE".

Size: 35mm in diameter.

Ribbon: 35mm wide, the ribbon for this medal has a dark blue background which represents the waters of the Prevlaka peninsula. The yellow central stripe represents the sun that rises, promising a peaceful and prosperous future and is flanked by thin white stripes. These are followed on either side by a band of dark blue and UN blue representing peace. Ninety days of service in the Mission was necessary to qualify for award of the medal.

Suspension: The ribbon is threaded through a 12mm diameter ring, which passes through a loop fixed to the top of the piece. The ring will move forwards and backwards.

United Nations Military Observer Mission In Prevlaka was established in January 1996 under Resolution 1038 (1996). The mandate was to monitor the demilitarisation of the Prevlaka peninsula in accordance with Resolutions 779 (1992) and 981 (1995). This Mission operated in the Prevlaka Peninsula of Croatia. New Zealand had military observers attached to the force.
