THE UNITED NATIONS MEDAL (UNTAC)

Obverse: The United Nations global projection emblem, above which are the letters "UN".

Reverse: Plain, with the legend "IN THE SERVICE OF PEACE".

Size: 35mm in diameter.

Ribbon: 35mm wide, the ribbon for this medal has 8mm green edges, inside of which are 1mm dark blue stripes, 4mm light blue stripes and 1mm red stripes. The centre of the ribbon is white. Ninety days of service in the Mission was necessary to qualify for award of the medal.

Suspension: The ribbon is threaded through a 12mm diameter ring, which passes through a loop fixed to the top of the piece. The ring will move forwards and backwards.

United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia, 15 March 1992 to September 1993. It was mandated to conduct free and fair elections, military arrangements, maintenance of law and order, resettlement of refugees, and the rebuilding of the country's infrastructure until the new government was elected. The maximum strength of UNTAC was 22,000 personnel. New Zealand personnel who served with the Mission were engineers, communications personnel, a naval contingent and military observers.
