THE UNITED NATIONS MEDAL (UNIIMOG)

Obverse: The United Nations global projection emblem, above which are the letters "UN".

Reverse: Plain, with the legend "IN THE SERVICE OF PEACE".

Size: 35mm in diameter.

Ribbon: 35mm wide, the ribbon for this medal is light blue with, from the left side, 2mm green, white and red stripes, while from the right are 2mm black, white and red stripes. Ninety days of service in the Mission was necessary to qualify for award of the medal.

Suspension: The ribbon is threaded through a 12mm diameter ring, which passes through a loop fixed to the top of the piece. The ring will move forwards and backwards.

United Nations Iran/Iraq Monitoring Observation Group, in Iraq and Iran, 20 August 1988 to February 1991. Its function was to verify, confirm and supervise the cease-fire and the withdrawal of all forces to the internationally recognised boundaries, pending a comprehensive settlement. The maximum strength of UNIIMOG was 399 personnel. New Zealand had military observers and an Air Force transport unit attached to the force for the duration of its deployment.
