The award of the New Zealand Efficiency Decoration was instituted on 14th August 2020. It is awarded for long service and good conduct by officers of the New Zealand Army Territorial Force upon completion of fourteen years' service. Clasps may be awarded for each additional seven years' service. Clasps are oblong, are in gilt, and bear the Royal Cypher.

The long service and good conduct of officers of the Territorial Force had formerly been recognised by the conferral of the British Efficiency Decoration under a Warrant dated 17th November 1952, and regulations dated 23rd March 1966.

The New Zealand Defence Force Long Service Award Regulations, 2020, specify the period of time a person must serve to be eligible for the award, and the period of time a person must serve to be eligible for the award of each additional clasp.
