THE NEW ZEALAND VOLUNTEER SERVICE MEDAL

Obverse: An Uncrowned Effigy of King Edward VII.

Reverse: A kiwi with a surround of fern fronds.

Size: 37mm in diameter.

Ribbon: 38mm wide, the ribbon is khaki in colour.

Suspension: The ribbon is threaded through a 14mm diameter ring, which passes through a loop fixed to the top of the piece. The ring will move forwards and backwards.

This award was instituted in 1902. It was awarded to officers and other ranks of the New Zealand Volunteers upon completion of twelve years' service. A total of 736 awards were made between 9 April, 1902, and 3 May, 1912. This medal was superseded by The New Zealand Territorial Service Medal upon the formation of the Territorial Force in 1911.
