THE NEW ZEALAND MERITORIOUS SERVICE MEDAL

Obverse: An Uncrowned Effigy of the Sovereign.

Reverse: The inscription "FOR MERITORIOUS SERVICE" within a wreath of laurel surmounted by a Royal Crown and above which is the inscription "New Zealand".

Size: 36mm in diameter.

Ribbon: 32mm wide, the ribbon is crimson having in the centre a narrow stripe of green.

Suspension: By an ornate bar.

This medal is awarded for long and meritorious service, and is now restricted to twenty serving members of the New Zealand Army, ten serving members of the Royal New Zealand Navy and fifteen serving members of the Royal New Zealand Air Force. Recipients must be in possession of the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal and must have served for at least twenty one years in the regular forces. It is awarded to senior non-commissioned officers, usually of the rank of sergeant and above, but some earlier awards were made to lower ranks.

The medal was superseded on 15 October 2013 by The New Zealand Defence Meritorious Service Medal.
