THE GENERAL SERVICE MEDAL 1918-62

Obverse: A Crowned Effigy of the Sovereign.

Reverse: The standing winged figure of Victory, who is placing a wreath on the emblems of the two Services. In her left hand she is holding a trident.

Size: 36mm in diameter.

Ribbon: 32mm wide. Purple with a 9mm green stripe down the centre.

Suspension: By a unique design of ornamental suspender.

Clasps Issued: 16

This silver medal was awarded to members of the Army or Air Force for a total of sixteen theatres between the years of 1918 and 1964. Clasps awarded to members of the New Zealand forces include;

"MALAYA"
Between 16th June, 1948, and 31st July, 1960, (Colony of Singapore between 16th June, 1948, and 31st January, 1959). Qualifications for this award were one or more days' service on the strength of a unit in the Federation of Malaya or the Colony of Singapore between these dates.
A squadron of the New Zealand Special Air Service was engaged in deep jungle penetration against guerillas in Malaya from 1955 until 1957. They were replaced by the 1st Battalion, and later the 2nd Battalion, of the New Zealand Infantry Regiment. The Royal New Zealand Air Force also took part in these operations.

"BRUNEI"
Between 8th and 23rd December, 1962. Qualifications for this award were one or more days' service in the operational areas in the State of Brunei and/or North Borneo and Sarawak between the dates mentioned, both inclusive. Members of the Royal New Zealand Air Force were involved in this operation.
