THE BRITISH WAR MEDAL

Obverse: An Uncrowned Effigy of King George V surrounded by the legend "GEORGIVS V BRITT:OMN:REX ET IND:IMP:".

Reverse: St. George on horseback facing right. The horse is trampling on the shield of the Central Powers. At the foot are a skull and crossbones, at the top there is a rising sun. Around the edge are the dates "1914" and "1918".

Size: 36mm in diameter.

Ribbon: 32mm wide. A 17mm orange watered stripe down the centre, bordered with 3mm white, 1mm black and 3mm blue stripes.

Suspension: By a plain, straight, non-swivelling suspender bar.

This silver medal was awarded to all who served in the British Forces during the First World War between 1914 and 1918, as well as to Naval members of the Mission to Russia in 1919-20, and for mine clearance in the North Sea between 11th November, 1918, and 30th November, 1919. It was therefore awarded to all New Zealand servicemen and servicewomen who served overseas during the First World War.
